He was born in Philadelphia, attended Le Rosey in Switzerland and St. George’s in Newport, and entered Princeton in 1942. That fall he enlisted in the Marine V-12 program and graduated in 1944 with a major in politics and a minor in economics. He served in the Marines during World War II and in Korea as a first lieutenant.
After leaving the service, Herb began working in New York City, where he lived most of his life. He started as a copywriter and moved into the advertising industry, where he led campaigns for many consumer and pharmaceutical products that are now household names. He retired as a senior vice president and executive of Bates USA in New York. In his retirement he pursued his passion for research and writing and published several books, including In Praise of Sailors and, most recently, American Courage .
Herb is survived by his children, Nancy A. Warden, Herbert W. Warden IV, Polly W. Taylor, and Anne W. Sinkinson; and five grandchildren.
