After graduation, Charlie taught at a preparatory school and worked with Bertrand Russell. He entered the publishing business as an executive with Pergamon Press, D.C. Heath, and Elsevier Co.
In 1988 he joined John Wiley & Sons, serving as president and CEO from 1990 to 1998 while directing the company as it became a global corporation. Charlie was widely influential in publishing, and was president of the International Publishers Association and chair of the Association of American Publishers. In 1988 he received AAP’s highest honor, the Curtis Benjamin Award. He helped lay the groundwork for publishing online and tirelessly worked on behalf of intellectual-property rights.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy; his son, Kenneth; his stepchildren, Christopher, Shannon, Patrick, and Nicolas Moore; and 10 grandchildren. Our class sends deepest sympathy to his friends and family.
