James Hamilton Scheifley '34

Published in the Sept. 24, 2008, issue

Jim Scheifley, who after nearly 25 years with the Ford Motor Co. retired in 1962 as industrial relations manager for Argentina, died May 22, 2008.

He and his wife, the former Dorothy Marx of Madison, Wis., moved to Delray Beach, Fla., where Jim, an avid fisherman, soon became a familiar sight on the banks of many local canals and ponds with his fishing rod. He spent 14 years of energetic, dedicated public service on the Delray Beach city council, including seven consecutive elections as vice mayor and mayor. Jim was proud of being an important part of the first sand restoration of the city beaches and the purchase of the Delray Municipal Golf Course.

Jim also served as president of the Delray Beach Republican Club, president of the Tropic Isle Civic Association, chairman of the Delray Beach Community Chest, and director of the Florida League of Cities. A local newspaper pointed out that Jim “was an example of how one can make retirement years meaningful and rewarding, making a positive impact on the community.” In 1982 Jim retired from political life but continued to pursue his hobbies of fishing and golf.

Jim is survived by his wife.
