Arch L. Metzner '36

Published in the Nov. 5, 2008, issue

Arch died July 1, 2008, in Wheeling, W. Va., his birthplace.

After preparing at Exeter he majored in economics at Princeton and belonged to Dial Lodge. His first job was with the Wheeling Dollar Savings & Trust Co.

On June 18, 1942, Arch married Sarah Ann Whiteley of Wheeling. From 1942 to 1946 he served as an instructor in the Air Force at bases in Colorado.

After four years in Colorado, Arch decided that a “sweet little nest somewhere in the West” would be a good lifestyle, so he moved to Denver. He resumed his banking career in the trust department of the United Bank of Denver. In 1970 Arch became an adjunct professor at the University of Denver College of Law, teaching courses in wills and trusts. He returned to Wheeling after he retired in 1979.

Arch loved Colorado. In a letter he said, “In this country the mountains offer what life is all about.”

Sarah died in 1996. The couple had no children, but Arch is survived by a foster son and six foster grandchildren. To them, we send our sincerest sympathy.

We regret the loss of this good man of intellect and integrity.
