Jonathan was born in 1916 to Alexander and Susanne McKee Lee Mason. He graduated from the Hotchkiss School, and at Princeton was a member of Charter Club.

During World War II, Jonathan served four years in the Army as a special agent for intelligence. After his military service, he worked 11 years for Bache & Co. on Wall Street. Later on, in and out of the Orient, he helped Bache launch the Japan Fund in 1962 and then served as its longtime chairman.

Jonathan served on the boards of the Japan and Asia Society, International House and the U.S.-Japan Foundation. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Natsuki Nakayama Mason; two sons, Alexander and Anthony; and five grandchildren. The class extends its sincere sympathy to all of them.
