Richard Fleming '87

In 2000, Richard Fleming ’87 decided “to kill my incipient midlife crisis dead in its tracks” by traveling — mostly on foot, but also by donkey cart, tractor, and bicycle — from one end of Cuba to the other. The self-deprecating, humorous chronicle of his journey, “Walking to Guantánamo” (Commons), was published in October. The photo above, of a voodoo ceremony in Santiago de Cuba, is one of more than 60 images he took along the way that comprise a companion volume of photographs, “The Road to Guantánamo,” published by Commons this month. A selection of his photographs is on view at Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta through Feb. 28.
