Charlie came to Princeton from Phillips High School in Birmingham, Ala. He left Princeton after two years and graduated from the University of Tennessee. During World War II he served in the Army Signal Corps.
He came from a family of teachers, so it was only natural that he should enter the teaching profession. Initially he taught biology and chemistry in the public-school systems of Birmingham and Colletsville, N.C. After he earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina, Charlie went on to teach European and American history at Averett University in Danville, Va. At Averett his service and abilities were recognized with an honorary doctoral degree.
Charlie never married. He retired in 1984 and moved to Fernandina Beach, but he retained a lifelong interest in property that he owned in Avery County, N.C., in the northwest section of the state and near where his grandfather had taught at Appalachian State Teachers College.
