“Yes we can” may not be such a new idea after all, as these participants in the 1986 mega-event Hands Across America demonstrate. Approximately 7 million people, including these unidentified students inside FitzRandolph Gate, held hands in a human chain that stretched across the continental United States for 15 minutes on May 25, 1986, to raise money for charities fighting hunger, homelessness, and poverty. Even though Hands Across America raised nearly $20 million, it fell far short of its lofty $50 million goal. Do any Princetonians recognize themselves in this photo?
