Archivists filed this hula hooper’s photo under “intramural sports,” but there’s no evidence that Princeton students ever participated in organized hooping competitions. This unidentified Princetonian may have taken up hooping as part of his fitness regimen. After exploding on the American scene in 1958, when an estimated 80 to 100 million were sold as toys, the hula hoop’s popularity waned in the 1960s. The past few years have seen a revitalization of the hula hoop as an implement for working out. Can any PAW readers identify this athlete or the onlookers behind him?
