Pete grew up in Westfield, N.J., and attended Westfield High School. At Princeton, he was a history major and manager of the tennis team. After graduation, he joined General Chemical Co., which became a division of Allied Chemical Corp. During World War II, he served in the Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

Pete’s assignments during his 30 years with Allied took him to St. Louis, where he met his wife, Bette, and later to Los Angeles. Pete and his family became enthusiastic Californians, and when he retired after spending three years at Allied’s headquarters in Morristown, N.J., Pete and Bette returned to California.

In his retirement years, Pete was recruited by the University of California at Santa Cruz to develop an alumni program. He retired from the University of California in 1977 but continued to live in the Santa Cruz area until he and Bette moved to Berkeley.

Pete is survived by his wife, daughters Becky and Edwina, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
