He came to Princeton from Phillips Academy, Andover, was a history major and a member of Cap and Gown, and roomed with David Adams and Sandy Trowbridge. In June 1951 he and Sarah “Penny” Rand were married. Mike served with the CIA in Germany and in 1957 graduated from Harvard Business School.

Returning to Minneapolis, he was chairman of Pas Lumber Co. Ltd. from 1965 to 1987. Mike was also a director of the Northwest Bancorporation of Minneapolis from 1969 to 1990, a predecessor to Norwest Bank and Wells Fargo. He was a board member of the Walker Art Center, an active supporter of the University of Minnesota, and the founder of Minneapolis Pathways, a center for those suffering from life-threatening diseases.  

Mike died April 30, 2008, of heart disease. He is survived by Penny; their children, David, Sarah Chase, Lucy Starkweather, Rufus, and Nicholas; 12 grandchildren; his sister, Katherine Evans; and his cousins, John Winton ’52 and Kate Winton ’83. Another cousin, Waring Jones ’51, died in January 2008, and his sister, Margaret Anderson, died in June.
