Born in Harrisburg, Pa., he was class valedictorian at Penn High School and also prepped at Mercersburg. At Princeton, he roomed with Dick Silvers, majored in chemistry, graduated with honors, and was a member of the choir and Key and Seal Club. After graduating in 1943, he worked for the Manhattan Project, receiving a citation for his work.

Charlie earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947, married Charlotte McConnell in 1948, and served with the Navy at Quantico until 1950. While teaching medicine at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, he also conducted research and headed the department of infectious diseases. He was fascinated with being a “medical detective,” with playing the piano, and with music itself. He spent four enjoyable summers in Greece as a faculty member of an archaeological expedition.

He married his second wife, Jacqueline Willrich, in 1985, and they danced at our 50th reunion. Besides Jacqueline, Charlie is survived by his daughter, Susan Ware; his son, Thomas McConnell Wolfe; stepchildren Christina and Johann Willrich; and two granddaughters. We will miss the love he always extended to Princeton and to all of us.
