An undergraduate faced weapons-related charges after borough police said he ran through campus carrying an imitation assault rifle March 6. Calls to Public Safety beginning at 11:24 p.m. by students who saw the man, later identified as Steven Shonts ’12, sparked a search of the area by police and Public Safety officers. The University sent out a CAMPUS SAFETY ALERT at 12:42 the next morning, urging students to remain inside and to lock all windows and doors. The Daily Princetonian reported that the student, after receiving the alert, called Public Safety to say that he thought he might have caused the incident; he was taken into custody and later released. At 1:24 a.m., Public Safety notified students that there was no threat. In an e-mail to the Princetonian, Shonts apologized for his “irresponsible behavior” and said he had no intention of causing “undue alarm.”
