From graduation on, Sam served Princeton and ’47 in many capacities, and beginning with his 1943 V-12 days, he made many ’47 friends.

Sam started his post-Princeton career “selling rags on Seventh Avenue,” but soon joined Fidelity Union Trust Co. in Newark, N.J. His work on estates and trusts (complemented by a Rutgers law degree) brought him much satisfaction. So did many civic activities.

Sam and Joan were married in 1958. They planned and built a house in Short Hills, where they raised three children.

Sam’s devotion to Princeton was especially inspired by the quality of the education he received. He spoke often of the need for alumni support to maintain the University’s excellence, and he worked diligently to recruit students and increase Annual Giving. In 1989 he received the Jerry Horton Award on behalf of the Northwestern New Jersey Annual Giving Committee for increasing AG “participation and the dollar amount.”

For 20 years Sam held season tickets for Princeton’s hockey games. In 2007, for his loyalty, the team gave him a hockey jersey signed by all its members and their coach.

Sam died Oct. 19, 2008. Celebrating this great Princetonian, we send fond regards to his beloved Joan and the family.
