Sumner died peacefully Feb. 6, 2009, in his home state of Illinois.

While at Princeton, he majored in religion, joined Cap and Gown, and played football for two years. His senior roommates were Jim Conner, Nick Murphy, Wright Elliott, and Hod Carter.

After graduating, Sumner was employed by Stanford University and took graduate courses in history there. He spent the balance of his career at Sumner Rahr Co., specializing in philanthropic support, communications, and strategic planning for nonprofit institutions thoughout the country. He served on the boards of Kenilworth Union Church and the Evanston History Museum.

He is survived by his wife, Gwyn; his children, David, Julie, and Elizabeth; and nine grandchildren. The class sends sincere condolences to them in their bereavement.
