John “Jack” Paul died Oct. 9, 2008, after a long battle with Lewy body dementia.

Following in the footsteps of his father, George Paul ’25, John came to us from Irvington (N.J.) High School. At Princeton he was a member of the swim team, the marching band, and Elm Club, and majored in biology. In 1956, John joined the Army’s 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment and was stationed for two years in Germany.

After military service, John moved to Philadelphia to begin a successful 31-year career in R&D at Smith, Kline & French (now GlaxoSmithKline), followed by consulting with Wyeth and Fujisawa.

John was an avid and accomplished sailor from age 11, sailing every nook and cranny of the Atlantic from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean!

A dedicated alumnus, John served Princeton quietly and humbly. A talented writer, he was class secretary for many years, originating a class summer newsletter. Also, he was secretary of Project 55 during its early development. John was an important part of the glue that held the class together. In 2001 he received the class president’s award for “service to the class in all its activities.”

John is survived by his wife, Janet; son Christopher; daughter Betsy; three grandchildren; an extended family; and many friends, to whom the class extends deepest sympathy.
