George Harben, whom we knew as George Leamy during our undergraduate years, died peacefully in his sleep April 17, 2007, at his New York City home after a long illness.
George entered Princeton from Riverdale Country School and joined Quadrangle Club. His Princeton studies were interrupted by service in the Pacific after he volunteered for the Marines and was assigned as a gunner on the battleship New Jersey. He participated in several landings when U.S. forces secured Pacific islands.
Returning to the University, George received a bachelor’s degree in history cum laude for his thesis “The Historiographic Mind.” He then earned a master’s degree in economics at Pace University and spent his working life as an economist with several Wall Street firms. At Dean Witter he worked with Professor Zbigniew Brzezinski on foreign aspects of U.S. economic policy.
George devoted himself to several hobbies in sequence, first painting, then poetry, and finally tennis.
George is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Marilynn LeVine; his sons Joshua, Jeb, and Zeph; two grandsons; his brother, William Nathaniel Harben ’44; and his sister, Judith Alger. The class expresses its sympathy to the family.
