Paul Epstein died of pancreatic cancer March 12, 2009.

He came to us from Swampscott (Mass.) High School. At Princeton, he dined at Key and Seal, was in the band, fenced, and worked at WPRB. Paul earned a medical degree at Tufts and did his residency at the University of Chicago. After a fellowship at Penn and Air Force service, he returned to Penn, where he practiced, serving as a clinical professor of medicine and founding director of the university’s cardiovascular pulmonary training program.

Paul’s specialty was occupational lung diseases. During the course of his career, he evaluated nearly 20,000 individuals for pneumoconiosis, testified influentially before the Senate on asbestos issues, and served as an expert witness on tobacco cases.

Paul built an international reputation as a medical editor and educator in service to the American College of Physicians (ACP). A deputy editor of the Annals of Internal Medicine and an editor-in-chief of the Medical Knowledge and Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP), he was made a master of the college in 2007.

The class extends its sympathy to his widow, Marcia; his daughters, Amy and Robin ’95; his sister, Joan; brother Leonard ’59; and the extended family.
