Born and raised in Baltimore, Pete Mathews graduated from the Gilman School, where he excelled at basketball and baseball. He converted to lacrosse while at Princeton. A member of the Thomas Aquinas Institute and Tiger Inn, he stayed with us for two years before returning to Baltimore and a lifelong career in banking.

Pete began his 40-year career at Equitable Trust Co. in 1950. He was a fixture in the consumer-lending area, serving a long stint as head of the department. In later years, he was in charge of credit/asset-based lending before concluding his career by starting the private-banking department.

Pete was one of the original commissioners of the Maryland Home Improvement Commission.

Portions of his summers were spent at Cape May, N.J. It was there he met his wife of 53 years, Lee Symington. They had three children, Louis P. Jr. ’79, Elizabeth Dorsey Mathews, and Katherine Mathews Honaker.

In retirement, Pete was a highly sought-after bridge partner. He and Lee enjoyed the company of fellow Tigers Frank Peard and Charlie Stout in Florida, as well as a whole cohort when in Baltimore, including former roommates Craig Lewis and Bo Willis.

Pete died Oct. 31, 2008, following a 30-year bout with cancer.
