Reed Hartel died of cancer Oct. 26, 2008, at his home in Lexington, Mass.
Reed came to Princeton from Forest Hills (N.Y.) High School and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. His father was in the Class of 1926. Reed and his roommate, Bill Gregory, were members of Court Club. He participated actively in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers-Institute of Radio Engineers (AIEE-IRE), the Advertising Forum, and radio station WPRU.
Reed received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1961. His career was in electronics management, and he became president of Dyer-Clark Co. in Lawrence, Mass. He spent the last 25 years as a consultant to small business and devoted time to volunteer work.
During his 50 years in Lexington, Reed showed his Tiger stripes by attending many Harvard-Princeton basketball and hockey games. He was a frequent visitor to the Tiger Tent at football games in Cambridge. At the time of his death, he was serving with classmates on a Boston mini-reunion committee.
Reed was known for his keen mind and ready humor. He is survived by his children, Jacqueline, Karen Hartel-Koenig, and Reed; grandchildren Hannah and Ellis; and his dear companion, Mary Bailey, and her daughter, Hilary, to whom we extend our condolences.
