“Semiconducting Feathers,” an image by chemical engineering graduate student Richard R. Lunt of an organic semiconducting film composed of micron-sized crystallites, won the People’s Choice Award in the 2009 Art of Science competition. The contest highlights scientific images created during the course of research projects. The image was taken using an optical microscope with cross-polarizers and a Nomarski filter. Celeste Nelson, assistant professor of chemical engineering, won the top prize awarded by a panel of judges in the competition with her image, “baby squid.” An exhibition of 48 works chosen from more than 200 submissions will be on display in the Friend Center atrium for a year.
