The Chronicle of the Horse

After Princeton and service in the Army, Peter began his career with a photography business in Baltimore with his brother, Gary. A native Baltimorean, he moved to Middleburg, Va., horse country early in life.

A graduate of Pomfret School, Peter was a terror on the lacrosse field at Princeton as a long-stick defenseman. In our first two years, he was the center of a convivial group at 81 Blair that managed to temper the rigors of academia. Peter had an extraordinary gift for friendship. He dined at Ivy. He welcomed us to the National Sporting Library for a wonderful tour of English art on the final day of a Washington, D.C., mini-reunion in 2002.

Peter did it all. He died May 18, 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Weedem Winants; four children, Jennifer, Bryce, Peter Jr., and Garrett (a distinguished steeplechase rider known as Woods); and six grandchildren. His first wife, Rosemary, died in 2002.
