He was born in West Orange, N.J., and grew up in Llewellyn Park. He attended Carteret Academy and Lawrenceville before following his father, Douglas R. Nichols 1917, to Princeton.
Doug was inducted into the Army at Fort Belvoir and immediately chosen as an instructor, a position in which he served throughout World War II. Subsequently, he became president of Nichols Engineering and Research Corp., a company that combined traditional engineering/industrial projects with farsighted work in the areas of waste disposal and water purification. He remained with the company until it was acquired by Neptune Meter Co. and subsequently worked as a consultant in business-related environmental issues. He was a director of the Seligman Group of Funds for many years.
Doug was a fine bridge player and golfer and cherished the companionship that came with those activities.
During his career, Doug remained in New Jersey, where Princeton was always an important part of his life. He later divided his time between Rhode Island and Florida, and finally moved to New York City, his favorite place.
Doug is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Marjorie MacKenzie Nichols, and his daughter, Susan Nichols Ferriere. To them, the class sends condolences.
