Born in Bryn Athyn, Pa., he prepared for Princeton at St. Paul’s School, majored in politics, and played hockey and rugby. He was a personal friend of famed bandleader Lester Lanin, and as social chair of Colonial Club he saw to it that Lanin always appeared in person to front his orchestra when it frequently played at club dances.

After graduation, Carpie received his law degree from Penn and joined the Army’s Judge Advocate Division at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Later, he attended Penn’s Wharton School, was executive director of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and ultimately formed his own law firm, Ringe & Dewey.

He leaves his wife, Alexandra; his sons, Paul Jr. and Fred; his sister, Macy; and three grandchildren. Besides arranging for some of the best dance music on Prospect Street, Carpie provided good fellowship to his classmates and to many friends who will sorely miss him.
