John joined us from Mercersburg Academy and graduated from Princeton in June 1947 with high honors in history. He was in Prospect and took part in choir, band, and Glee Club. He went on to Yale for his Ph.D. and taught there for five years before joining Stetson. Over the years he received many awards and honors. He had a Woodrow Wilson fellowship in 1974 and received Stetson’s Outstanding Teachers Award in 1981. In 1992 he won the Council for the Advancement of Education Award.

John is survived by his widow, Ruth; daughters Carolyn and Nancy; and son David. Another daughter, Sarah, predeceased him.
