On the night before classes started, freshmen set out to find advice from alumni that was delivered in an unusual way — messages in bottles placed around campus. The idea came from the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, which wanted to connect graduates with the new class. After associate dean Thomas Dunne solicited nuggets of advice from alumni, 13 volunteers from the Student Design Agency designed the bottles that would hold the messages. At right from top are three examples: “Solve the mysteries of the Universe” (designer, Mariah Min ’10); “Smile and wave at people you know” (designer, CinCin Fang ’11); “Go abroad! Do it” (designer, Mayanne Chess ’12).
