Schwartz graduated from New York University in 1935, and served in World War II. In 1942, he was sent to Harvard University Graduate School to study psychology. From 1943 to 1946, he served in the OSS as a psychologist. After his Army service, Schwartz entered Princeton’s Graduate School and received his Ph.D. in psychology in 1948.

From 1948 until his retirement in 2000, Schwartz was a self-employed clinical psychologist in New Jersey. At one time or another, he was president of the New Jersey Psychological Association, New Jersey Psychotherapy Association, New Jersey Academy of Psychology, and the Organizing Council for the Graduate College of Psychology in New Jersey. The organizing council was successful, and the Graduate College of Psychology is now part of Rutgers University. He was a visiting professor at Rutgers and a recognized expert on group psychotherapy.

Schwartz is survived by Ruth, his wife of 68 years; his sister, Aminah; sons Kenneth ’67 and Richard; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graduate memorials are prepared by the APGA.
