Gregg received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and then earned his Ph.D. in biology from Princeton in 1946. He was on the faculty of Columbia University from 1947 to 1957, and was a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow in Copenhagen in 1949 and in London from 1953 to 1954. In 1957, he became a professor of zoology at Duke, remaining until he retired in 1986. Among his professional appointments at Duke, he was chair of his department and director of graduate studies. Gregg authored or co-authored 33 publications, including two books.

In addition to his academic career, Gregg was a skilled English longbow archer and craftsman and an active member of the English Longbow Society. He donated his extensive collection of antique Hausa tribe bows and arrows plus associated artifacts to the Smithsonian Institution.

Gregg is survived by his wife, Jan; three daughters; and six grandchildren.
