Three seniors majoring in the Woodrow Wilson School have received prestigious scholarships for graduate study at British universities: Henry Barmeier as a Rhodes scholar, Jessica Lanney as a Marshall scholar, and Josh Grehan as the Sachs scholar.
Barmeier plans to pursue a master’s degree in nature, society, and environmental policy at the University of Oxford. A native of Saratoga, Calif., he expects to continue his study of issues related to sustainable and locally grown organic food. At Princeton he has served as chairman of the Greening Dining Committee, which has advocated local food purchases and tray-free meals. Barmeier, who is pursuing certificates in Spanish and environmental studies, won the Shapiro Prize for Academic Excellence in 2007 and 2008.
Lanney will use the Marshall scholarship to complete two master’s degrees at the London School of Economics and Political Science — one in social policy and planning, the other in urban and regional planning studies. Lanney, who is from Concord, N.H., is pursuing a certificate in urban studies. She won the Shapiro Prize for Academic Excellence in 2008 and heads the editorial board of The Daily Princetonian.
Grehan, from Saskatchewan, Canada, hopes to spend two years studying at Worcester College, Oxford University. His thesis focuses on how communities can use public spaces to help underprivileged youth. The scholarship, named for the late Daniel M. Sachs ’60, provides a senior with an opportunity to study, work, or travel abroad after graduation.
