Hap died peacefully Aug. 27, 2009, at home in Enfield, Conn., surrounded by family. He and Marion had moved there after living 43 years in nearby Longmeadow, Mass.

He came to Princeton (his father was in the Class of 1909) from the Loomis School, and after graduation he attended Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. During World War II he served in the Navy Medical Corps in the European and Pacific theaters.

Hap practiced medicine in Springfield, Mass., from 1953 to 1985 and was also associate clinical   professor at Tufts Medical School. He was a member of the American Medical Society, Hampden District Medical Society, and American Lung Association of Massachusetts, and was past president of the Eastern Thoracic Society.

After retiring from practice, he became medical director for the Mass Mutual health insurance managed-care network for 12 years.

Hap always said his most important outside activities centered on his family. He was an avid gardener and fisherman, enjoyed golf at Longmeadow Country Club, and was active in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Hap is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marion Lee (Pearson); his sons, David and Robert; his daughter, Sarah O’Neill; and granddaughter Molly O’Neill. To all his devoted family, we offer sincere sympathy.
