Princeton cheerleaders display the athleticism that defines modern cheerleading in this 1995 photo taken at a basketball game in Jadwin Gym. Today students who try out for cheerleading learn a cheer, chant, and dance. Though candidates practice stunts and may demonstrate their gymnastics skills, they’re also chosen for their “enthusiasm, voice projection ... and cooperativeness,” according to the University’s cheerleading Web site. Cheerleaders perform at home football games, men’s and women’s home basketball games, and some away games. This year’s cheering roster includes 13 women and one man, Trent Fuenmayor ’12. Can any PAW readers identify the cheerleaders pictured?

My sister-in-law Melinda Sims (née Hough), class of 1995, is the blonde cheerleader, second from the right in the top row.

Blair Blackwell, class of 1996, is the cheerleader second from the left on top row. She was a classmate of mine at Winter Park High School (Winter Park, FL).

Blair Blackwell '96 is next to Melinda, third from the right ... we're still in regular contact and are having lunch next week, some twenty years after sitting together in freshman Russian class!

The bottom row (the guys) are (l to r) Leonard Marquez '96, Matt Ferguson '96 (that's me), Jason Penzak '95, and Jason Todd '95. The top row (the women) would be (l to r) Charmaine Williams '97, Blair Blackwell '96, Melinda Sims nee Hough '95, and Jordana (Danni) Kron '97. I can only guess whose knee is in the far right of the picture. This would be about half of the squad that year ... at the time we had almost as many men (providing some high-flying stunts) as women. We will try to get a good picture of the whole team to round out the response to "from the archives."
