Pete died Oct. 1, 2009, in Syracuse, N.Y.  

Graduating from Loomis in 1936, he took a postgraduate year at Westminster School in London.

Majoring in history at Princeton, he graduated with honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Pete played freshman football and hockey, served as secretary and president of the Press Club, was a board member and managing editor of the Tiger, and joined Quadrangle Club.

After graduation, Pete became a newspaper reporter and editor, lastly with the Bureau of National Affairs in Washington, before joining the family insurance firm, Raleigh & Munns, in 1949. Elected president in 1955, he retired after selling the firm in 1998.

Pete became heavily involved in Syracuse community affairs, and as president of Syracuse General Hospital, merged it with Crouse-Irving Hospital.

He survived a tragic loss in June 1959, when his 5-year-old son wandered off in dense woods and, despite a massive search effort, his body was not found until October.

Pete was predeceased by his first wife, Lucille Grover Raleigh, and his second wife, Jane Eberle Raleigh. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Jenkins; son Stuart ’74; three grandchildren; and 13 step-grandchildren.
