Stu Cooper died of arteriosclerotic heart disease Dec. 1, 2009, in Cape Coral, Fla.
Stu got his start at Columbia High School in South Orange, N.J. He followed his brother, Kent ’39, to Princeton, where Stu was coxswain of the freshman lightweight crew, a member of the class memorial fund committee, and president of Dial Lodge. He majored in economics and graduated with honors.
After college, Stu received a medical degree with honors from Columbia University. He then spent two years in the Navy. During the Korean War he was recalled into the Navy.
In 1950, Stu married Marjorie Elizabeth, who studied nursing at Columbia Presbyterian. They moved to Hillsdale, N.Y., where Stu practiced medicine. In 1964 he joined the Bureau of Heart Disease of the New York State Department of Health. He also taught medicine at Albany Medical College. From 1971 to 1980 he practiced independently in Great Barrington, Mass.
In the 1970s, Stu and Marjorie enjoyed sailing out of Gloucester, Mass. Ultimately they moved to Cape Coral, where sailing was available year-round. Marjorie died in 1997. For the remainder of his life, Stu continued to share his passion for sailing and the water with family and friends.
To his sons, Scott and Craig, and his daughter, Rebecca Glassmyer, the class sends condolences.
