Alfred P. Dennis died Sept. 23, 2009, at Sage Hill Farm, his home in Leesburg, Va.

Alfred was preceded at Princeton by nine family members. He prepared at Blair Academy, and at Princeton he majored in politics and graduated with honors after being awarded an SPIA summer scholarship in France. He participated in soccer and cross country and belonged to Dial Lodge. Alfred was editor of the school newspapers while at Blair Academy and Princeton.

Alfred’s graduate studies in international relations at the University of Chicago were cut short by World War II. He served in the Navy as a communications officer and was a part of the logistical preparation for Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s invasion of the Philippines. After the war he was posted by the State Department to Germany and then to Norway, where he met his wife, Eeda. His subsequent State Department assignments were to Italy, Iceland, Cameroon, and finally to Somalia as acting ambassador.

After retiring from government service, he became a Realtor in Virginia. Alfred and his wife shared a passion for architectural and historic preservation and were supporters of local preservation and charitable groups.

He is survived by Eeda, his wife of 61 years; their sons, Alfred, Rene, and John; and grandchildren Carl, Pierce, Samuel, and Stefan Dennis. To them all, the class extends sincere condolences for the loss of this loyal Princetonian.
