Mike died peacefully Jan. 24, 2010, at home in Providence, R.I., after a long illness. He was surrounded by family and friends.
Mike was one of the quiet stars of our class. He grew up in Ardsley, N.Y., and was an accomplished high school student, athlete, and musician. While at Princeton, Mike was a member of the University marching band and Quadrangle Club. He received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He moved to Rhode Island for a medical residency at Roger Williams Medical Center.
He continued his affiliation with Roger Williams, teaching internal medicine at Brown and Boston universities. Mike served as president of the Rhode Island Medical Society and the Providence Medical Association. He also chaired the Alumni Schools Committee of Rhode Island.
Mike enjoyed sailing, cooking, music, and sports and was noted for his quick wit, personal stoicism, and exacting standards. He was devoted to teaching and enhancing the quality of medical education.
The class sends sympathy to Mike’s sister, Nancy Shelby; niece Amanda Lee Shelby; nephew Russell Shelby; and his maternal aunt, Jane B. Steele. A fund to enrich medical residents’ education has been established in Mike’s memory at Roger Williams Medical Center, 825 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, R.I., 02908.
