Connie English died Jan. 11, 2010, at Meadow Lakes in Hightstown, N.J., where he had been a resident since 1988.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J., he graduated cum laude from The Pingry School, magna cum laude in history from Princeton, and earned a law degree from Harvard in 1937.

After serving as a lieutenant in the Navy from 1942 to 1945, he became a partner with the firm McCarter & English in Newark, N.J., from 1948 until he retired in 1977.  

Connie was an active member of the YMCA on the local, regional, national, and international levels. He served Kent Place School in Summit as a trustee from 1959 until 1981 and as president of the board from 1961 to 1972. He is the only male graduate in the history of Kent Place, having received an honorary degree in 1994. He also served as trustee of The Pingry School from 1954 until 1973, and received the Letter in Life Award, the highest honor given to alumni. He was a trustee of the American Bible Society from 1964 to 1993.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Morss English; three daughters; two sons and their spouses; eight grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. The class extends them its deepest sympathy.
