Edward McLean died July 5, 2008, in Greenville, Del. He was 91.  

Edward was born July 11, 1916, in Elizabeth, N.J. At Princeton he played varsity football and was an All-American lacrosse midfielder on the 1937 national championship team. He was a member of Ivy Club and graduated in 1938 with a degree in chemical engineering. This led to work with the DuPont Co. and world travel in its international department.  

During World War II, Edward oversaw an Australian factory that manufactured gunpowder. After the war he returned to the United States in a variety of capacities and retired in 1978 to pursue his lifelong passion for woodworking. As a master craftsman, he reproduced period American antiques and conserved museum-quality furniture, managing this business into his 80s. An avid gardener, he was on the Winterthur Museum board of trustees during restoration of its gardens.  

For 61 years he was married to the former Nancy Beyes. She died in 2005. He is survived by two sons, Edward R. Jr. and Kevin; two daughters, Jeanne McLean Schmitt and Margo McLean; and five grandchildren. To them all, the class extends condolences.
