and the U.N., died Dec. 8, 2009. He had Alzheimer’s disease and was 87.
Hills served in the Navy in World War II and graduated from Columbia University
in 1948. In 1950, he earned a master’s in Oriental languages and literature from Prince-
ton. He received a fellowship to study at the American University of Cairo and was a fellow at the John Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies. He spoke Arabic, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Turkish.
At the start of his career in the 1950s,
he worked for the U.N.’s Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. Then he joined the State Department and was assigned to the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris. In the 1970s and 1980s, he worked for the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, where he negotiated and oversaw programs in the Middle and Near East. For Princeton, Hills was a regional schools committee volunteer.
Hills is survived by Joan, his wife of 44 years; their three daughters; and four grandchildren.
