Bart died peacefully of lung cancer Dec. 4, 2009, at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Fla., surrounded by his loving wife of 57 years, the former Catharine “Kitty” Duane; his sons, Bartlett III and Brooke; and daughters Suzanne Ullrich and Catharine Klaus.
Born in Philadelphia, he graduated with honors from The Hill School, where he starred in soccer as he did later at Princeton. He majored in chemical engineering at Princeton and was president of the chapter of chemical engineers. He joined Tiger Inn with his close Hill classmates Bob Baxter, John Burr, Bill Cox, Bill Faber, Tom Fitts, Jack Hays, Frank Rhodes, Fred Schock, and Tom Steffens — then the biggest section of Hill men in T.I. history.
Bart was a Fulbright scholar and attended the University of Gittingen in Germany. He rose to prominence with Hercules Chemical Co., W.R. Grace & Co., Stauffer Chemical Co., and ICI Inc.
Bob Leach, another Hill graduate and Bart’s four-year roommate, called Bart an ideal roommate who had the courage of his convictions. He will be remembered for his hearty, husky laugh, his indomitable spirit, and, as son Brooke said, his love for his family.
In addition to Kitty and his children, Bart is survived by 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
