Archivists identified this photo as “Baccalaureate/Class Day 1949.” The location appears to be Alexander Hall, however, rather than the University Chapel — traditional site of the Baccalaureate service. According to Princeton records, University President Harold Dodds *14 focused his 1949 Baccalaureate address on the question, “Which comes first, the integrity of the individual or the authority of the state?” The topic was timely in the early days of the Cold War, but seems just as relevant today. Can any ’49ers confirm where Baccalaureate took place their graduation year or what other event is pictured?
