“Billy,” as he was known to his admiring classmates, died March 2, 2010, from complications of a faIl.

The son of a surgeon, Billy attended Boys Latin and Gilman and showed an early interest in following in his father’s profession.

At Princeton, he majored in biology, was co-captain of the wrestling team, a member of Charter Club, and a two-time All-American lacrosse defenseman.

He graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1943 and interrupted a residency at University Hospital to enlist in the Navy, serving as ship’s physician on the aircraft carrier Antietam in the Pacific theater during World War II. He served again during the Korean War and retired as a lieutenant commander.

Later, while maintaining a private surgical practice, he was a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. He also served on the boards of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland and the Gilman School. Among Billy’s many professional memberships and honors, he was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He was predeceased by Eleanor Virginia (Key), his wife of 52 years, and his son William Jr. To his survivors, sons Thomas and James and three granddaughters, Billy’s classmates offer their deep sympathies.
