Born in Philadelphia, Fred came to us from Germantown Academy and the Lawrenceville School. At Princeton he majored in politics, ate at Quadrangle, and roomed during senior year with Bob Wardrop.

For 45 years, Fred and his brother, Burt ’33, operated the Philadelphia firm Etherington Brothers, a textile-sales business. During World War II, he served as an officer in the 6th Bomb Group of the Army Air Corps in the Pacific. During his working career he served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Associated Day Care Services, and the Bala Presbyterian Home, and was president of the board of trustees at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Additionally, he was a former board member of the Merion Cricket Club as well as a member of the Merion Golf Club, the Mayflower Society, and the Baronial Order of the Magna Carta.

His wife of 61 years, Frances, survives him, as do a son; two daughters; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nephews, one of whom is Russ Etherington ’67.
