Alan died Feb. 22, 2010, in Naples, Fla., after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Most of his early life was in Chicago, where he became an Eagle Scout. He came to Princeton from the Morgan Park Military Academy, declining an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.

At Princeton he majored in psychology, graduating with honors. He was a member of ROTC and joined Tower Club.

Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Al was called to duty just three weeks after graduation. In 1944, he shipped to the European theater as executive officer of a self-propelled-gun battalion. Arriving just after D-Day, Al fought his way through Europe (including the Battle of the Bulge) until meeting up with the Russians at the River Elbe, just before V-E Day. A recipient of the Bronze Star, Al was separated as a lieutenant colonel in 1945.

AI’s entire business career was in the food industry (retail and wholesale) until his retirement in 1986 as senior vice president of Nash Finch Co. of Minneapolis.

Alan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betsy Allison Henning Clark; a son, William; daughters Betsy Miller, Wendy, Laurie, and Catherine; and seven grandchildren.
