Lou died Feb. 22, 2010, in Baltimore, Md.

A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, N.J., he majored in chemical engineering at Princeton, where he was active in intramural athletics and joined Elm Club.

After Princeton, Lou began graduate school at Carnegie Tech (one of the predecessors to Carnegie Mellon University) until joining DuPont in 1942. He entered the Navy in 1944 and worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tenn. Lou separated from the Navy as an ensign and returned to Carnegie Tech, where he earned master’s and doctor of science degrees.

Lou then worked for Shell Chemical Co. until 1952, when he joined American Cyanamid Corp. He held various managerial positions until retiring in 1984 as director of technical services. However, he continued working as a consultant on dyes and pigments for Daicolor-Pope Inc.

Lou and his second wife, Mary Glyde Duff Seivard, traveled extensively. He loved opera and musical history. For the last 15 years he lived in Oak Crest Village, a retirement community outside Baltimore, Lou was predeceased by Mary Glyde. He is survived by his former wife, Sarah Elizabeth DuBois Seivard; son Louis; daughter Sarah Seivard Colvin; two stepsons, Richard and Louis Duff; and 11 grandchildren.
