Al died April 2, 2010, in the Allenhurst, N.J., home that was his family’s summer residence away from their native New York, but became his own home some 50 years ago.
He was 87, and a lifetime lover of recreational and professional sports. As a child, Al and his pals shared games with baseball legend Babe Ruth (the frequent guest of a neighbor) when the area where they lived was a summer resort. This experience later led Al to coach his local Pee Wee League team, which won a township championship in 1956.
A graduate of Choate, Al majored in psychology at Princeton, where he was a member of Cannon Club. He roomed freshman year on Edwards Place and later with “Jake” Cartwright in Brown and with Lefty Evans in Blair.
During World War II, Al taught French to Army Air Corps troops. He graduated from Cornell Law School and spent his law career with Wall Street firms. A love for animals led Al to co-found the Monmouth County (N.J.) SPCA and serve as its president more than 20 years.
He was predeceased by Genevieve, his wife of 43 years. Al is survived by his companion of 25 years, Elizabeth Smith; his daughters, Kristine Hochster and Karen Akin; two grandchildren; and supportive in-laws and second family. He was a faithful friend and class member.
