A longtime Chestnut Hill resident, Alb was born in Philadelphia, raised in Miami and New York City, and came to Princeton from St. George’s School. At Princeton he majored in modern languages, specializing in French, and was a member of Cap and Gown. Senior year he roomed at the club with Ben Delaney.

During World War II, Alb was an Army logistics officer. His entire civilian career was in the shipping business, and he retired in 1983 as a vice president of E.J. Lavino & Co. He was a trustee of Springside School, a vestryman at the Church of St.-Martin-in-the-Fields, and a founder of the Wissahickon Skating Club. He also was a trustee of the Conanicut (R.I.) Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia and a member of the Sunnybrook Golf Club. For almost all of his adult life, he summered in Jamestown, R.I.  

Alb is survived by his wife, Madeleine; two sons; a daughter; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Another son predeceased him.
