Fred died July 9, 2008, at his home in Greenwich, Conn.  

He was born in Teaneck, N.J., and lived in Washington, D.C.; Groton, Conn.; and Englewood, N.J. He attended Englewood School for Boys, where he participated in many sports and activities. At Princeton he majored in economics, earned letters in varsity crew and hockey, and was on the Interclub Squash Team.

After Princeton, Fred spent time in the Navy and won the honorary sword presented by the New York Yacht Club. He rose to lieutenant commander, won a Bronze Star, and became assistant damage-control officer.

Fred became sales manager for specialty products at W.H. Wheeler Co. Later he entered into a variety of business ventures and in 1979 retired in order to move Mountain Weavers, an enterprise he bought, to Dorset, Vt. He served as president and chairman of the board of the company, which manufactures fine homespun cotton products.

Fred’s passion was sailing, and in 1975 he did an Outward Bound course at Hurricane Island, Maine, and later became president of the organization. Besides Dorset, Vt., Fred lived in Naples, Fla., where he enjoyed golf, tennis, bridge, and reading.
