Joel grew up next to the Penn campus, but had the good instinct to come to Princeton after graduating from Friends’ Central. He lived in 42 Little with John Kennedy, majored in history, played soccer and joined Key and Seal.

After graduation, Joel worked for his father’s textile firm, Dykeman, Loeb & Co., and rejoined it after the war. From 1964 to 1988, he was executive vice president of another textile company, Kiesling-Hess Finishing Co.

Joel enlisted in the Navy in 1940, and served over four years in the Atlantic theater during World War II. He remained in the Navy Reserve until 1957, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander.

As a boy, Joel sailed near his family’s cottage in Kennebunkport, Maine. Later in life, he enjoyed cruising in Maine, Chesapeake Bay, and the Caribbean.

After his retirement, he volunteered at the library of the Independence Seaport Museum and at the American Philosophical Society.

In 1948, Joel married Hungarian-born Evi Margit Bossanyi. Evi died in 1990. Joel is survived by his daughter, Victoria Brown; son Nicholas Loeb’ 81; and two grandchildren. The class sends sincere sympathy and fond remembrances to his family and friends.
