Jack Cloud died June 6, 2010, in Norfolk, Va.
He prepared at Andover. At Princeton, he was known as “Mr. Sunshine” and graduated cum laude. He earned a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1958, went immediately into the Army, and came out to become an associate attorney in two law firms. In 1963 he opened his own firm. A colonel in the Army Reserve, he also served as a law professor at several colleges.
A dean at Andover told Jack’s mother that he was “not college material,” an assessment belied not only by Jack’s academic achievements but by his successful adherence to Princeton’s requirement that students attend religious services once a week. Jack went to the Jewish service on Friday afternoons, leaving himself free until Sunday night to gain experience at women’s colleges and 52nd Street jazz clubs. An avid angler, Jack spent many happy hours fishing North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Jack lost both legs to diabetes, a condition he bore with dignity, and spent his last 10 years in a nursing home.
He is survived by his daughters, Julia Sandor and her husband Douglas, Rachel Joy and her husband Craig, and Kara Louise Cloud; eight grandchildren; his brother, Robert; nephew Jared; and a loyal friend Terry H. Davis Jr. To them all, the class extends its sympathy.
