Nick died of liposarcoma  Dec. 24, 2009, in Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Born in St. Louis, Nick came to Princeton from St. Louis Country Day, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. Preceded at Princeton by his brothers, Edward ’53 and William ’56, Nick studied English in the Special Program in the Humanities, ate at Tower Club, taught Sunday school, worked in Firestone Library, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. Shortly after graduation he married his childhood sweetheart, Sandra Gale, to whom he remained married until her death in 1997. Nick remarried in 1999.

After earning master’s and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Minnesota, Nick joined the faculty of Covenant College as an English professor, later becoming dean of faculty, then vice president for academic and student affairs. He returned to teaching to finish his career and retired in 2006.

A writer of poetry, Nick lectured on it and gave numerous readings. He authored several books, articles, and reviews. He served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America, and was a member of Inner-City Ministries, Chattanooga Opera Association, Mission to North America, and other organizations.

At the time of his death, Nick was survived by his second wife, Elaine, who died in March 2010.  Three daughters, a son, and nine grandchildren also survived him.
